After constructing the new large bridge and needing a custom unit to display it on, we all had a chat and it was decided that we should construct our own tables. We agreed that they should be made modular so that any combination / layout is possible.
I designed them in CAD to ensure that everything fitted together as easily as possible and then a cutting plan was laid made from this to ensure the most effective use of the MDF sheets.
During our initial costing of the MDF and cutting fees it became apparent that the cost of cutting was going to be quite high. I looked around for a better deal and whilst I was looking I happened upon a large industrial panel saw for sale on ebay that was incredibly cheap. After speaking to the seller it was cheap because it required a number of repairs to make it usable. As an automotive engineer this didnt phase me, so a grand total of £105 was paid for it, James and I went on a Monday roadtrip to collect it – his van is bigger than mine and it should fit in.. we may have had to dismantle the door lock to get it in the back, but it fitted! Back at my workshop over the christmas break I spent about a week of my holiday dismantling, machining, welding, hammering and gave the saw a general refurb. After it was all back together it worked a treat, apart from I was missing a blade! Blade sorted and we were ready to get cutting!
Ian came over for the day and we blitzed through the 12 sheets of MDF and by the end of the day we had a few large piles of cut pieces! The next morning James arrived and we began assembly of the table tops. We got everything together and then the 3 of us started laying out for the paintwork.
They all got primed, sanded and filled – at this point my father leant a hand with the filler and sanding – I think he was worried that we were not going to get them out of the workshop in time for us to start work again after the new year! The green was sprayed on to give us an even coverage and then left for a few days to dry. A trial assembly was done and thats when we all stood back and suddenly realised just how big this display was going to be!
